I was born and raised in Howell County and graduated in 1976 from West Plains High School.  I married my wife, Dena, in 1985 and we raised three children together.  She is a graduate of Liberty High School in Mountain View Missouri.  My parents, James and Ruth Shannon, still reside in the house I grew up in.  I also have three sisters, Ann, Debra, and Charla and numerous relatives that still make their homes in Howell County.  My father-in-law, Richard Grogan, graduated from Willow Springs High School so my wife has many relatives living in the northern part of Howell County.  I mention all of this because I truly feel like the citizens of Howell County are my family.  And just as I feel protective of my family I feel the same protectiveness for all those that live and work in Howell County.  I feel I have a unique understanding of the problems and concerns of citizens because I share their concerns.  I have a passion for law enforcement and I want to be a part of keeping Howell County the best place to live and raise children.  I am dedicated to serving the needs of those in this county and consider it an honor to do so.  I have worked hard to build positive relationships between myself and the people of Howell County based on trust and mutual respect.  I am and will continue to be committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct in the performance of the duties of Sheriff.  I am Mike Shannon and I would like to continue to be the sheriff you can count on!  I ask for your vote of support on August 7th

Qualifications

I was elected Sheriff of Howell County in 2008 and I have worked diligently to serve the citizens in that capacity for the last four years.  Before becoming Sheriff I was a criminal investigator for Howell County prosecuting attorney Michael P. Hutchings for six years.  During those years I cultivated a good working relationship with the people in the courthouse while performing the duties of the investigator.  I actually graduated from the Howell County Sheriff’s Academy in October 2000 to become a commissioned officer and then became a reserve officer for the Howell County Sheriff’s Office.  But my passion for law enforcement actually began when Sheriff Hubert Holman hired me in the late 1980’s as a jailor and dispatcher at the Sheriff’s Office.  During the years in between working for Sheriff Holman and graduating from the academy I owned and operated my own business.  Although owning a business was rewarding, I found myself yearning to be back in the field of law enforcement.  In order to accomplish this I scaled my business back to part time and went to work full time as a criminal investigator.  I did this for the six years I worked there.  My son and I worked nights and week-ends for my business and I worked during the day for the Howell County Courthouse. When I won the election in 2008 I closed my business completely.  I felt the people of Howell County deserved a Sheriff who is solely devoted to their needs and concerns.  I did not feel that I could give the citizens what they need and run a business at the same time.
